Dental injuries and emergencies, while distressing, are quite common among children. About one-third of children have experienced some form of dental trauma, and many have faced dental emergencies.
There are two primary periods when the risk of dental trauma is highest: toddlerhood (18-40 months), as children start exploring their environment, and preadolescence/adolescence, when sports-related injuries become frequent.
Outlined below are some of the most typical childhood dental emergencies, along with helpful advice on how to manage them.
Toothache - Toothaches are frequent occurrences. Sometimes, it's as simple as food stuck between teeth, but other times, it can be more serious. If the pain persists, please contact our office.
Dental Avulsion (knocked-out tooth)
If your child experiences trauma resulting in a lost tooth, please contact our office immediately. If it's a baby tooth, place it in milk and call our office. If it's an adult tooth, time is crucial. Carefully pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root, and bring it to the office as soon as possible.
If your child has an intruded or displaced tooth, please contact our office so we can assess the situation properly.
Crown Fracture
The crown is the largest, most visible part of the tooth. In most cases, the crown is the part of the tooth that sustains trauma. There are several classifications of crown fracture, ranging from minor enamel cracks (not an emergency) to pulp exposure (requiring immediate treatment).
The pediatric dentist can readily assess the severity of the fracture using dental X-rays, but any change in tooth color (for example, pinkish or yellowish tinges inside the tooth) is an emergency warning sign. Minor crown fractures often warrant the application of dental sealant, whereas more severe crown fractures sometimes require pulp treatments. In the case of crown fracture, the pediatric dentist should be contacted. Jagged enamel can irritate and inflame soft oral tissues, causing infection.
Root Fracture
Dental Concussion
Injured Cheek, Lip or Tongue
Fractured Jaw
Head Injury/Head Trauma
If the child has experienced head trauma, it's essential to head straight to the Emergency Room. Even if consciousness has not been lost, it's crucial for pediatric doctors to rule out delayed concussion and internal bleeding.
If you have any questions about dental emergencies, please consult your pediatric dentist.
